Causes of reverse osmosis membrane performance damage

In China, reverse osmosis technology has been widely used in all kinds of water desalination process. At present, imported low pressure polyamide composite membrane is widely used in pure water engineering. The assembly level and process of reverse osmosis water treatment equipment are mature and perfect. However, the service life and performance degradation of membrane are serious in the process of equipment use, which often can not reach the expected design level. The main problems are improper use and maintenance of membrane and membrane pollution.

 

 

 

1Key to producing pure water by reverse osmosis equipment

 

 

 

There are two key points in the production of pure water in reverse osmosis facilities. One is a selective membrane, which we call semi permeable membrane, and the other is a certain pressure.

 

 

 

In short, there are many pores on the reverse osmosis semi permeable membrane. The size of these pores is equivalent to the size of water molecules. Because bacteria, viruses, most organic pollutants and hydrated ions are much larger than water molecules, they can not be separated from the water phase through the reverse osmosis semi permeable membrane.

 

 

 

In many kinds of impurities in water, soluble salts are difficult to remove.

 

 

 

Therefore, the water purification effect of reverse osmosis is often determined according to the desalination rate. The desalination rate of reverse osmosis mainly depends on the selectivity of reverse osmosis semi permeable membrane.

 

 

 

2Prevent damage of membrane performance

 

 

 

New reverse osmosis membrane elements are usually stored in sealed plastic bags after being soaked in 1% NaHSO3 and 18% glycerol aqueous solution. Under the condition that the plastic bag is not broken, the service life and performance will not be affected after one year storage. When the plastic bag is opened, it should be used as soon as possible to avoid adverse effects on the components due to NaHSO3 oxidation in the air. Therefore, the membrane should be opened before use.

 

 

 

After the test run, we have used two methods to protect the film. 2% formaldehyde solution shall be used for maintenance after two days of commissioning (15-24h); or 1% NaHSO3 solution shall be used for maintenance after 2-6h operation (the air in equipment pipeline shall be drained to ensure no leakage of equipment, and all inlet and outlet valves shall be closed). Satisfactory results can be obtained by both methods. The first method is more cost-effective, and it can be used when the idle time is long, and the second method is used when the idle time is short.
